Using the tools

The studio answers one question in several ways: which pastel stick is this color - in the ranges you actually care about.

It reads any image, not only photographs. A picture of a painting works just as well - your own, or one by a painter you admire - and shows which sticks, in the makes you own, come closest to its colors.

Every tool has a line called Ranges to compare. Open it and tick the makes you own, or want to buy. Before choosing a color or after - it makes no difference: the answer is always given range by range, with the numbers each maker uses. Those numbers are what you take to the shop.

Image

Choose an image, then tap or drag over it to sample a color. A patch is averaged rather than a single pixel, so camera grain does not decide the answer. Choose a part of the image first if you only want that part. Underneath, every range you ticked answers with its own closest sticks and their numbers.

Color

Turn the ring for the hue, move inside the square for strength and tone, or type a color code. They all show the same color. The matches underneath follow it, a block for each range, so you can see what every make calls that color and by which number.

Number

The other way round, and the heart of the studio: you have a stick and want the same color in another make. Choose the range it comes from, type its number, then tick the ranges to compare - up to three usable substitutes in each, with their numbers, and a plain "no equivalent" where a range holds nothing near it.

Palette

Choose a range and how many sticks you are willing to buy. The result is your image painted with those sticks and no others - point anywhere to see which stick goes there, and its number. Change the range and the same image is answered again, in that make.

Harmony

Choose a color, a range and a scheme. The angles are turned on the painter's wheel, not the screen's, and every point of the scheme comes back as a real stick from that range, with its number.

Saving your work

Press Save project and give it a name. A project keeps the whole studio: the color, the ranges being compared, the range and size of the palette, the harmony - everything except the image. Open project in the library brings it all back.

One image serves the whole studio: the one you bring into Image is the one Palette works from.

About the colors

Color data comes from manufacturers’ published charts and Paul Centore’s pastel color survey. Measured color values are used where available. Screen previews and matches are guides; paper, lighting, and pigment affect the finished painting. Availability of historical ranges has not been verified.

Your personal library

Studies and your pastel collection are kept in this browser, on this device — nothing is sent anywhere. They stay until you clear your browsing data, with one exception worth knowing: Safari, on the iPhone and the Mac, clears what a page has saved after seven days without a visit. Export your library to keep a copy you own — a single file you can store, move to another browser, or bring back later.
