Every tool searches the ranges you choose, and every answer is a real pastel stick with its maker’s own name and number. The catalogue holds 7,826 colors from 23 brands currently in production.

Image

Choose any picture, crop it if needed, then tap it to sample a color. The app reads a small patch around the point rather than one pixel. Tick any number of brands and each range answers with its closest sticks and numbers.

Color

Choose a color on the wheel and adjust its hue, saturation and value. The color travels between tools, so a color sampled in Image opens in Color ready to refine.

Alternative

Choose the original brand and pastel, then the brands to compare. Only genuinely close substitutes are offered; the nearest visibly different color is clearly marked as not a match.

Harmony

Choose a brand, a main color and a harmony. Every point is matched to real sticks in that range. Moving the main color or changing its saturation and value recalculates the whole scheme.

Recent colors

Your most recently selected colors wait at the top of the page. The row shows as many as fit the available width. Tap one to return to it; Clear empties the row. It is shared by Image, Color, Alternative and Harmony.

Printing and sharing

Where a list of matching pastels is shown, the printer button prints it, saves it as a PDF or shares it. Each section includes the brand, color sample, name, number and closeness.

How colors are compared

The studio uses CIEDE2000, an international standard that measures color difference as the eye judges it. Almost identical, Very close and Close are offered as substitutes; visibly different colors are reference only.

Why it exists

Soft pastel offers an extraordinary abundance of colors, but sticks lose their wrappers, numbers are easy to lose, and no painter can remember thousands of colors across many ranges. The studio makes those ranges visible and comparable.

How it came about

Soft Pastel Color Studio was made by Lena Rivo, a pastel painter and teacher. It began with Alternative — a way to choose one stick and see what other brands offer in its place. Image, Color and Harmony grew from the same catalogue.

Who it is for

For pastel painters at any level: find matches, compare brands, or explore harmonious colors within one range.

The color catalogue

Color data comes from manufacturers’ published charts and Paul Centore’s A Color Survey of Artist’s Pastels (2016). Physical measurements are used wherever available, and colors are compared with CIEDE2000. Matches are practical guides: batches, pressure, paper, layers and light all affect the final stroke.

Price and privacy

Free, with no subscription and no purchases. The web version has no accounts and saves no projects. The mobile app is available for Android.
